Chapter 8

TAZ TRIED not to pace the floor of the hospital room, but with all the energy inside of him that demanded to be released, it was a near thing. The best he could manage was to tap his foot, although that wasn’t all that satisfactory. And it earned him more than one dirty look from Reed’s brother. Which was no kind of deterrent from Taz’s point of view, but he had to stay mindful of Reed’s parents and sister and try to behave himself.

When Peyton got up to leave just after Reed did, Taz nearly followed him from the room. He knew, just knew, Peyton was going to talk to Reed, and it made him mad.

What was this guy’s problem? The only reason he didn’t follow him was because Renee was going on and on about hair color and wanting to know about his, and he couldn’t figure out a way to just get up and leave, not without being rude to his Reed’s sister, and that he refused to do.

The door to the hospital room opened and Reed walked in. At last. Taz anxiously searched his face…. He might appear fine to someone else, but Taz knew his lover well enough to know that he really wasn’t. His lips were pressed into a tight line, and his face was too pale. All bad signs. Reed crossed the room and stood next to him, uncharacteristically silent. Taz could feel the repressed anger rolling off Reed, but there was something else too.

Taz looked up at Reed. He wanted to say something, but he didn’t dare. He realized he needed to save his words for a more private moment. Instead, he squeezed Reed’s hand, his very cold hand. Reed looked down at him, and his facial features relaxed somewhat. Reed took a deep breath, closed his eyes for a moment, then opened them. A small nod and a mouthed “later” told Taz all he needed to know. Taz vaguely listened as everyone around them talked, but his attention and his eyes were on Reed. Until the point at which Peyton entered the room a little while later and Reed stiffened up again. Taz decided he’d had enough.

“Reed? I’m getting hungry. How about you and I go find something to eat?”

Jeanette spoke up quickly. “You boys go on ahead. I think we’ll probably do the same. It is getting on to lunchtime, isn’t it? Then I need to go home and clean house before your father comes home tomorrow.”

“And I need to check on the bar, actually,” Renee spoke up, even as Herb began to protest.

“You don’t need to do that, dear. Go home and get some rest. You’ll wear yourself out. I don’t need you waiting on me, Jeanette.”

“Mom, you know we’ll help,” Reed added, before replying to Taz. “Good idea, babe. Hang on a sec.”

Taz felt a rising tension in the room that he couldn’t identify, one that was trying to settle in his chest. He simply wanted to get Reed away… from Jacob, from Peyton… from anything bad that might harm him.
