Due to the vagaries of history, not all the correspondence written in the fateful days of June 1815 survived. We are clearly missing letters from Grouchy to Davout as Davout refers to them, but as to the contents of the letters we have no idea. Soult sent a dispatch to Grouchy as follows:7
I see by the letter that you have done me the honour of writing to me at Réthel on the 24th, that today, the 25th, the cavalry at the orders of Your Excellency will be at Neuchâtel and Craonne, and that you will be with the rest of the troops in Reims, from where your intention is to you move by Fisme on Soissons.
Last night, a staff officer had been sent to you in the direction of Laon, to carry an order from the Minister of War, who informs you that the command of the Armée du Nord is entrusted to you, and that the 1st, 2nd and 6th Corps will be formed into a single army corps, under the command of Lieutenant-General Comte Reille, and that the 3rd and 4th Corps, would also form an army corps, under the command of Lieutenant-General, comte Vandamme.
According to these provisions, I have the honour to ask you, at the receipt of my letter, to go join me in Soissons, where I will give you the details of the troops gathered on this point, and after having spoken to you, I am ordered to Paris, where I have orders to surrender myself.
From Reims, you can leave the command to General Vandamme, who will finish the movement you ordered on Soissons.
I have the honour to inform you that I give orders to Mr. Le Comte de Valmy and Count Milhaud, to leave immediately at Reims, with the 3rd and 4th Cavalry Corps they command, to travel to Soissons.
I also give order to General Bom, commanding the 3rd Cavalry Division, who was in Craonne, to leave at the arrival of the cavalry that Your Excellency sent, to go to Bucy and Si Marguerite near Soissons.
I have the honour to warn you that the 1st and 2nd Cavalry divisions are still in front of Laon, and that the cavalry and infantry of the Guard, are in column behind Laon to support them. The 5th division of cavalry is at Coucy, and the 1st, 2nd and 6th Corps are at Soissons.
