System’s Uniqueness
It is a closed loop system , meaning that the blood does not leave the blood system.
The cardiovascular system is filled with fluid with positive pressure without connection to the pump contraction.
Most of the time the atria are filed 80% passively, with minor energy expenditure, while the other 20% are active by the atria contraction.
System’s regulation is governed by peripheral factors and not by heart variables, due to passive filling.
The system is flexible.
Physical exercise is the stronger stimulation that increases Q to its maximum. Other stimulations such as emotional thrill, gravitational changes, ambient and body core temperature variations, sexual activity, and pregnancy are less strong than exercise.
Additional part of the circulatory system is the lymphatic system, which is a network of lymphatic vessels and lymph capillaries, lymph nodes, and organs, and lymphatic tissues and circulating lymph. One of its major functions is to carry the lymph, draining and returning interstitial fluid back toward the heart for return to the cardiovascular system, by emptying into the lymphatic ducts. Its other main function is in the adaptive immune system [2].
In the cardiovascular system, there are two circulations that originate from the heart: (a) the pulmonary circulation and (b) the systemic circulation (Fig. 6.1).
