Chapter 9

Caroline felt bitter the next day. She woke up next to Brian for the second time, feeling utterly exhausted from yesterday’s meeting. She wondered if she had made a mistake letting him into her life; if this whole encounter was something she would go on to regret forever. But it didn’t matter now, because just for today, Brian was there.

“Hey,” she said, running her fingers across the side of his face. Brian slowly opened his eyes, flashing her a reassuring smile.

“Hey,” he breathed, rising on his elbows, his scruffy hair catching Caroline’s attention. She reached out to touch it, hesitating for a moment before racking her fingers through the disheveled mane. “How’d you sleep?”

“Not great,” she said, her eyes fixated somewhere over his shoulder. “But hey, at least I don’t hear any birds chirping.”

Brian grinned, but then he seemed to have remembered everything all of a sudden, and it wasn’t long before he reverted back to his old, deflated state. Caroline’s eyes searched his, then without thinking, she leaned in and kissed his forehead. “Emilie texted me last night,” he said, stroking his abs with one hand. “She said she wants to go to the precinct with you today.”

“Yes,” Caroline said, nodding subtly. “I’m guessing we need to-”

“Warn the cops that all hell is about to break loose?”

“Don’t say that.”

Brian turned his head towards the window. He didn’t seem very hopeful. Caroline buried her face in his chest and closed her eyes while he stroked her hair with the back of his hand. “It’s going to be okay,” he said reluctantly.

Caroline didn’t life her gaze off the bed covers. If anything she just wanted to stay in this moment forever, caught in a cocoon with this man who was, if anything, a complete stranger. Adversity, she thought, brought people closer together, even made them fall in love with each other. Caroline knew that, at the end of the day, her feelings weren’t real. Brian just happened to be there and they happened to have been caught up in that spiral like two strangers on a sinking ship. If anything, Caroline thought, Brian was introduced to her as part of an accidental arrangement called fate, but that didn’t make it any more meaningful.
