Janelle

“Um… Janelle, you may want to come out and see this.”

Lifting my head from the pile of bills on my desk, I frowned slightly when I saw the uneasy expression on Gerald’s face. Standing, I started over to him, hoping that whatever was waiting for me was something I could handle.

“What’s going on?”

“We, um… we have new clients.”

I smiled. “That’s good news!”

The expression on Gerald’s face said that he wasn’t so sure, but I didn’t share his worries. After looking at the bills coming in, I couldn’t be picky about the money we had coming in. Turning the corner to the conference room, I almost skipped through the doors. That was just how excited I was. But I was in for a huge surprise.

Walking into the conference room, I could barely get my thoughts together before my nostrils were hit with the very distinct odor of marijuana. Inside the medium-sized room was a table where five men were sitting, waiting on me. Just one look told me that these were clients that Luke had sent me. Each man wore the finest street clothes and were smothered with jewelry, enough to probably purchase a few homes, cars, and still have enough left over to put up for a rainy day. Their skin was covered with various tattoos, markings that most likely pointed to whatever gang they were affiliated with, among other things.

At the head of the table, in the seat that was normally reserved for me—being that this was my firm and all—sat a man who was obviously the boss of the others. He was large in size, had a thick and bushy but nicely shaped full beard and probably about double the tattoos as the others, the most noticeable ones to me being the teardrops coming from his eyes and the 6-pointed star on his muscular neck.

When I walked inside of the conference room, all of their eyes turned to me, but it was the man at the head of the table who stood with his hands clasped together in front of his body.

“Are you Mrs. Murray?”

Yep… these were definitely friends of Luke’s.

“I’m Ms. Pick—well, actually, yes, that’s me. Um… how can I help you?”

Searching the room for a chair, I was just about ready to sit in the corner rather than ask any of the men to move.

“You can sit here,” the boss said, pointing to a chair that was occupied by a man sitting to his right. The man stood and pulled the chair out for me. Biting the inside of my lip, I eased into the chair, thanking him when he pushed it in for me.

“We need your assistance. I’m about to make some moves… and it would be good to have an attorney on retainer,” the boss began. He took a seat and pulled out a toothpick, securing it between his teeth while he spoke.

“Okay.” I spoke slowly, but my mind was running, trying to figure out how I could ask the questions I was thinking in the most respectful way possible.
