Bennie? Had she really said that?

What was happening to her? Surely she wasn’t falling back into all of her old habits and ways. Not only having to watch for Ben’s overprotectiveness, but her bone-deep love for him, too?

Except...she’d seen a look in his eyes, more than once, that day. Starting in her bedroom when he’d come to check on her...

Senses honed, warmth buzzing through her veins, Jenny entertained the idea that Ben was falling for her all over again, too. That the love she’d known as a teenager that they’d always shared was coming out of hiding. The first chance they’d given it to do so since the divorce.

His looks...the way he talked with her, rather than at her...

She wasn’t just dreaming that stuff up.

And...he’d said he was going to leave. With a plan that sounded like putting himself on a hook as bait.

Talk about walking straight into danger. Not taking precautions...

She had to stop him.

The thought brought her up against a mental brick wall. She couldn’t even get him to take a day’s break to give the leaver a chance to solve her situation, since she seemed to think she could. How could she convince Ben to back down on his plan to get the guy and end the case?

Unless...she talked to him in his language, his world...pointing out all the dangers he’d be walking into.

Which meant she was going to have to think like him. Figure out dangers that would likely never surface. Give him such a plateful of them he’d see that he couldn’t possibly protect himself against all of them. At least not without a lot of time and planning.

Which would give the leaver a chance to end things peacefully.

With the least damage, shorter jail time and no lives lost.

And in so doing, she could buy them another day or two together. Because...maybe...had this time been given to them for another reason? To give them a chance to find each other again?

Yeah, the guy who’d been attacking them was angry. She’d even go so far as to say he had anger issues and needed counseling. Didn’t make him a killer. A child trafficker.

He was damaging property, clearly taunting Ben with that last hellacious outburst. But if he had time to calm down, to get past the initial searing pain of having his child taken from him, get himself back to the point where he could see and listen to reason...

Ella had only been asleep a little more than half an hour when Jenny heard Ben’s footsteps on the stairs. They should think about having dinner.

More salad was fine with her. But Ben...he’d always been a big eater.

And then, afterward, when Ella was fed and sleeping again...maybe...could they possibly...

Wetness was pooling, unbelievably, as the love of her life entered the room. Fourteen or forty, didn’t much matter. He did it to her.

Though, forty-two looked a whole lot manlier, sexier than fourteen had...

Until she raised her glance to Ben’s completely straight face. The steely glint in his eyes.
