“I love you, Saber!” I shouted, fighting to free myself from Alaric’s disgusting grip, but he was bigger and stronger than I was. I slashed at his skin with my claws and drew blood, but he snatched one of my arms and bent it so far behind my back that I thought it was going to snap.

“Hold still, you prick,” he growled. “You’re lucky Lucas negotiated a deal with your coven. I’d have just killed you if it was up to me.”

My eyes were fixed on Saber, who was being crushed to the ground by Nikolas and Lucas. He cried out one last time before the sound of the wind swept his voice away. The pull was still there though—the undeniable pull of fated mates, the universe telling us that we were meant to be together.

Tears poured down my cheeks, freezing almost instantly until I was wearing a mask of ice. I felt them too—Thomas and Ulfred, and as Alaric carried me deeper into the falling snow, their presence grew greater, weighing down on me like a heavy chain draped around my neck.

I hadn’t seen this coming, and neither had Saber. It never occurred to me that my coven would venture onto Berowin land, and the only explanation for it was that Lucas and Thomas had worked out a deal for this exchange. I was basically a prisoner of war being returned to his side whether he liked it or not.

“Quit it,” Alaric said again, shouldering me in the chin. I cried out as he threw me into the air like a rag doll. I crashed down into the snow and looked up to see Thomas and Ulfred standing over me.

“There you go, fellas,” Alaric said. “Lucas’ll have my ass if I mouth off or start any more shit, so just take your boy and get off our land.”

“You got a wise mouth, boy—” Ulfred began to say, but Thomas silenced him with a slap.

“Gladly,” Thomas replied. “We do not wish to be here any longer than need be. Come, Sin. It is time to go home.”

Home…I thought. I’m not going home...I’m going to prison.

A day ago, the coven would have been my home, but so much had changed since then. My world had opened up in a way I never could have dreamed, and I’d been given a glimpse of what my life could be, and going back to the way things had been was going to be torture.

I couldn’t move. Maybe if I lay there long enough the snow would simply swallow me up and save me from living the rest of my live apart from my fated mate. Knowing that he was so close, but so far away would be a torment too impossible to bear.

“Get up,” Thomas told me. “It’s time to go.”

No…

“Get up,” Thomas repeated.

“Get up!” Alaric growled. He kicked me hard in the stomach, knocking the wind out of me.

“HEY!” Ulfred roared. “Do that again and I rip your fucking head off.”

Alaric growled but kept his mouth shut.
