Chapter 9

AX’LOK

My feet echo as I step through the interior of the chamber. It takes longer to plant the EMP and blastos than I had expected. With the detonator shoved into my pocket, I work to climb out and find the slick walls nearly impossible to scale. When we first came in, we walked through the trapdoor which led right to Pocala’s lab. I can’t risk it now, as Briel is doing her part in diverting the Ulorn’s attention. After another attempt, I have enough traction and begin to scale up the walls, liberating myself from the metal room.

Straining my ears, I hear nothing. After stepping closer to the tunnel entrance, I sit still and listen again. The blastos have a chance of caving in the lab and the nearby tunnels, so I can’t risk Briel being hurt. Zoid and Oragg are nowhere near here, at least not when we checked earlier. I wait until I feel that she should have surfaced at the other end already.

The slightly ajar door opens effortlessly as I creep inside near the lab. Pausing by the lab door, I listen. Nothing but the echo of the underground facility reaches my ears. Inside, the place is empty. Pocala left in a hurry, for her lab table was spread with unfinished business. A sinking feeling begins to gnaw at my gut as I turn back and leave the lab.

Briel is nowhere in the tunnel as I follow what should have been her path. The darkened corridor could easily have thrown someone off if they weren’t certain of the way. My heart sinks when I see the three tunnels leading off in different directions. If she didn’t take the second tunnel, she may have gotten lost in the underground maze. Since Pocala isn’t in her lab, I can only surmise that she figured out Briel was in the tunnel and took after her. The sinking feeling grows greater as I follow the correct tunnel toward the exit. There is no sign of Briel anywhere as I creep along, staying in the dark and allowing my keen eyes to see the way. When I emerge, I call out for her.

“Briel? Are you out here?”

No answer comes. My feet retrace the steps back to the magnetic chamber, and she’s nowhere to be found.

“Briel?”

Nothing. Fists form as I step back into the tunnel, knowing very well that the mad beast has snatched my future mate. Is Briel lost in this underground labyrinth? The tunnels are quiet except for the occasional drip of water in the distance. I’ll search the great maze until I find my true one.

Coming to the three junctions, I take the wrong one and carefully walk ahead, searching every alcove and room along the way. The descent sharpens as the air cools inside. The walls soon turn to hewn Lucis rock. Briel would have likely turned back as I’m doing in order to try another way. My heart lurches at the thought of how she must feel in knowing that I lost her.
