Chapter 13

I sat on the floor in the barn looking like I was meditating. Derek was in front of me. He was trying to be encouraging, but with no progress I could tell he was struggling. He was trying to get me to expand my powers out like I had the night I killed the five wolves.

Groaning, my head slumped. “I don’t know how I did it.”

I tried reliving the moment, tapping into my feelings of that night. My fear that Cam was hurt, my anger at the wolves, but nothing happened.

“Okay, here,” Derek scooted closer to me until our knees were touching. He acted no differently towards me since we kissed. I wondered about it after it happened. If Derek had kissed me because he wanted to, it made me evaluate every touch we shared. Perhaps it was to silence me and prove a point that I hadn’t grasped. Either way he’d made no attempts to kiss me again nor did we talk about it. He grabbed my hands in his resting them on my knees. “Now close your eyes.”

I sighed and did as he asked not feeling like it would make any difference.

“Feel my hands in yours. Listen to the sound of my voice.”

“You trying to hypnotize me, Derek? ‘Cause I think my eyes have to be open for that.”

“Evie, take this seriously.”

I stifled a grin.

“You and Tyler came inside looking for the wolves. Cam found you just before a wolf appeared trying to drag you away. You had no idea why or where they were taking you. Cam wanted to follow them to find out why.”

As he spoke the picture began unfolding in my mind. My breathing was increasing as I remembered, but my eyes stayed closed as I listened to Derek’s words.

“They attacked him. Do you remember why?”

I nodded. “Because he refused to give me up.”

“Then what happened?”

“While the group distracted Cam, one of the wolves tried stealing me away.”

“You fought—so did Cam, trying to keep you from the wolves until what? What happened, Evie?”

“They…They stabbed him. I thought…”

“What?”

“I thought he was dead. I tried to wake him.”

“What did you feel?”

“Panic. Anger,” I hissed through gritted teeth.

“Then what?”

“I wanted them to suffer. To pay.”

I could feel it bubbling inside me, the same way it had that night. I tried to let it explode out, but it wouldn’t. I pressed harder. Derek yanked his hands from mine like I hurt him.

“What?” I wondered my eyes shooting open.

“You shocked me.”

“With my honesty?” I questioned.

Derek rolled his eyes. “Literally.” He held up his hand showing black scorch marks shooting across it.

“Shit, Derek! I’m sorry.” I reached for his hand to examine it further.

“What happened?” he asked.

I bit my lip nervously. I didn’t know. I had felt my power aching to be released but it wouldn’t leave me like it had at the warehouse. I inspected Derek’s hand closer. The marks didn’t present as burns. It appeared like dead tissue. My eyes widened. My gift wasn’t supposed to affect my fellow horsemen, at least not my primary one.
