Chapter Five

THURSDAY NIGHT

It’s a pity David won’t make it this evening, standing a girl up is never the way to make a good impression. Ivy won’t be happy at all. She seemed excited about this date, on paper, well on the internet, they seemed to be the perfect match. The thing is she’s already met her perfect match, and he’s not perfect on any paper, and he doesn’t exist on the internet. He’s probably not even real.

She’s alone at the tall cocktail table, I watched her struggle to get up on the high bar stool, too short to do it in a ladylike fashion. It made me smile, she ordered red wine, I know it will be a Merlot. That’s her favorite. The place is busy, and she’s watching the door, each time it opens she looks up in anticipation. By her third glass of wine she’s checking her phone and watch every few minutes. I watch her type furiously, a frown wrinkling her perfect face. She doesn’t have wrinkles in her sleep, her face is so soft and serene, unlike the scowl she’s wearing now. Her eyes scan the room again, looking to see if she’s missed him in the crowd. I want to yell ‘he’s not coming’ but I stay silent in the darkest corner of this establishment. A seedy band is playing, the sound is so offensive that if I wasn’t here for her, I’d leave. The hollow voice and tinny sounding guitar, cut through the ambience, making it feel even more crowded than it is. Thursday is two for one cocktails, and it brings in the crowd.

The waitress comes over to her, I watch her ask for the time, and order another drink. The waif of a girl writes it on her little notepad and gives Ivy a sympathetic smile. I don’t share her sympathy, this is a good thing, she should be happy she avoided death by boredom that would have been her date.

This time a whole bottle is delivered to her table, I feel like I am watching her make bad decisions, just a quick glance at the crowd, and knowing that a gorgeous woman like her being drunk and alone is a terrible idea. She pours the blood red liquid into the glass and puts the bottle down on the table, still looking around with hope that her date will appear.

When she’s almost at the bottom of the bottle and the end of her tether I move closer, I want her to see me, before she sees me seeing her. Let her notice me, that way I was just in the same place at the same time. I know she felt the same connection that I feel, it was obvious today in the coffee shop. The blush of her cheeks, the way she fought to find words, it was all pointing to what I already knew. Finding a chair at the bar, I position myself in her line of sight and order another Irish whiskey and water.
