At the cafe the Companions nibbled on chunks of raw salmon and sipped a honeyed tea as they kept an eye on the tree across the way, and in particular the bright yellow door that belonged to Lord Hornsby. Several times birds landed on his door branch, but none of them were owls. The shadows lengthened and Aarn grew nervous.

“The embassy from Aviara should be here,” he said, and waived for the blue jay waiter to refill his cup. “There are only a couple of hours left until the council; surely Lord Hornsby will be attending the meeting.”

The blue jay brought the pitcher of tea and as he stepped past Rafe his foot caught on the corner of the hawk’s perch and he tripped, wings madly aflutter and the pitcher spun across the table soaking everything. Aarn gasped and fell backwards off his perch as he leaned away from the spray. Becca and the others scrambled to pick him up and brush him off. So it was that Robyn and Fae entered the home of Lord Hornsby unnoticed by her friends.
