Chapter Eight

Mya spoke softly despite the air box surrounding them. “That is Geetic. Kindred of Air. He makes mini tornatoes. His mind is not stedi. I think Strong Mind odors him.” She knew some of her words weren’t right, but at least she was getting better.

Haldone turned toward her. “Who is Strong Mind?”

She studied the men around the camp then shook her head. “He is not there. He has back and wide long hair. Kindred of Mind.” She looked into his eyes. “He plays with minds.”

Haldone’s hand in hers tightened. “He is the one who put the evil mind into Sandale.”

She nodded. “He is ebel.”

“Haldone, control yourself. This box is dependent on you.” Keeva’s voice from beside her had a calming effect on Haldone.

She gave Keeva a grateful smile before returning her gaze to the camp. Churi was not present either, but another Kindred of Light was building something out of wood. “The one biding is Ickis. He is Kindred of Light. He makes pickures in the air.”

Keeva repeated her words correctly. She loved that he understood her so easily.

Haldone nodded. “We had someone like that creating images for some of the rainboxes we made. With eyllen, you can make the image last forever, but the only images he could create were ones he’d seen.”

“What about that man there, with the Kindred of Heart birthmark?” Keeva gestured with their joined hands.

“I do not know what his ability is. He banages ones hurt.”

“Ah, a healer then and perhaps the one that saved your brother’s life, Haldone.”

Haldone frowned. “Then what is he doing with lawbreakers.”

Keeva sighed. “It may be that like me, he was exiled unfairly and was caught by them.”

Oh, she hoped not. How awful to be trapped into serving Strong Mind. The idea that some of the men in the camp may have no choice bothered her.

“We have to consider every one of them a true lawbreaker first.” Haldone’s voice brooked no argument.

Movement on the stream side of the camp caught her attention. As the black and white hair of Strong Mind appeared, she gripped the men’s hands tighter. Though the man had wrinkled skin, his gaze was sharp. Beside him, as usual, was his pet boarox. He never went anywhere without that brutal creature by his side.

“Holy Bendis, it is a boarox.” Keeva’s surprise was mirrored in Haldone’s face.

“I’d heard that Theron had been attacked by one outside his cave, but they belong on the polar caps.” Haldone turned to look at her. “I wonder if this is the same one or another one. How can the man keep it from ripping into his followers?”

It was a question she’d had as well when she’d first seen the animal with Strong Mind, especially because she’d seen one open its mouth and devour two feroon at the same time. It had two rows of jagged sharp teeth that her mother had said were like the Great White shark on Earth. But this animal was land based and its large bulbus lips covered its enormous mouth, the upper one hanging past the lower one, making it look sad.
