A linear regression tool within Excel is a must for any serious researcher. Ideally such a tool would have a GUI which would allow the user to specify the dependent (y) and independent (x) variables. The tool should produce a line graph which contains both the original data and the linearly fitted data as shown in Figure 5.35. The fitted equation and R2 value should be placed on the graph, as well as labels for the title and axes. Finally, a dataset should be generated for the fitted line with the number of points in the generated dataset specified by the user.
Some thought needs to be given as to what the functionality of this new tool should be. The tool should allow multiple fitting sessions. When multiple fitting sessions occur, the graphs and generated datasets should appear on separate and uniquely named Worksheets and charts. The user should be able to specify the following information for the fitting session:
The Ranges of the independent X and dependent Y data to be fitted.
