Wealth consists not in having possessions, but in having few wants.

-ESTHER DE WAAL

AFTER A PEACEFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP, Kate rose on Wednesday morning determined to get her Christmas tree up and decorated. She and Marge met at the corner as usual. It was a bit cloudy and the snow had melted leaving grey slush on the sidewalks and streets.

“Your new red outfit is just right for the season,” Marge observed, “along with your… yellow bug… you are one colorful lady.”

“Yes, I even surprise myself… thanks for letting me… stay with you… I think it really… helped me adjust… to the sudden changes… (inhale… exhale).”

“You’re dealing… with everything beautifully… better than I could… “

“After the holidays… I want you and Trudy… and Millie… to decide where… we go on vacation… I’ll pay transportation and lodging… you girls will be… responsible for your meals… shopping, extras. We could probably get a good package…. through Travelogues… “

“Kate, that sounds… wonderful… but can you… .really afford. to do that?”

“I know… I need to be careful… but you’re my best friends…

I want us… to go somewhere… for fun… to thank you… my staff… the Fabulous Four… I’d love to pay for everything… but my financial advisor… reminds me that I need to plan ahead… for possible medical and. long term health expenses… so I have to be careful. After all, I’m … single… no husband… I’m on my own. “

“I’ll talk with Gertrude Hopkins… at Travelogues… she’s planned a lot of tours… for me… she’s great. I’ll pick up some brochures… and have them on Saturday… at The Brewery.”

“Good idea… finished with your shopping?”

“Are you kidding… no… how about you?”

“I think so… baked cookies yesterday… and putting my tree up today… glad I bought a phony one… a few years back… saves a lot of time.”

“Right… going to Lessons and Carols… this year?”

“Yes… I am… “

“Shall I pick you up?”

“No… I’m going with… George Carpenter… my lawyer?”

“Way to go Kate!”

“Marge… it’s dinner… and a concert… that’s all.”

“That’s all… how long since… you had a date?”

“I have a social life… we all get together… at church… and.”

“No, I mean… a real date… with a man.”

“A few years… I guess.”

“Right… aren’t you the least bit… excited about it?… you like him don’t you?”

“Oh yes… he’s a real gentleman… and has been… very helpful to me… and Phil.”

“And, he’s sexy… for an old guy… “

“He’s MY age…”

“I know it… you have fun… I might see you there… I think Trudy and Dorothy… are going too… should be a good concert…

“Always is.”

They reached the end of their route, and slowed down to a walk. “Well, you get yourself all gussied up, and knock him dead.”

“For heaven’s sake Marge… don’t make more of this… than it is.

“I’m just happy for you… you won some money… you’re enjoying it… you have a new look… a new car… and you met a nice man… enjoy it.”

“Thanks, I am having a grand time… and it probably would not have happened… if I hadn’t won the money… although life was pretty good before.
