Chapter

Nine

When Atlas opened the door, he started laughing. He pushed it wider, and Remi came into view.

Remi took a step forward and gasped, her eyes wide. She glanced back and forth between Carlee and her brother. “It’s Carlee?” She swatted playfully at his chest. “Why didn’t you just tell me?”

He grabbed her hand. “It wasn’t any of your business yet, nosy.” He stepped to the side. “Carlee needs to talk to you. Please be nice.”

Remi swatted at him again. “Since when have you known me to not be nice?”

“Extra nice then. And if you don’t mind, keep her company for a few hours. I’ll talk to Kade and tell him where you are. Don’t leave my room.”

“Why not?”

He narrowed his gaze at her. “Do you always question orders?”

She shrugged. “Usually.” She squirmed next.

He chuckled. “Did you get your ass paddled this morning?”

“None of your business,” she retorted before squeezing past him and shutting the door.

Carlee pulled her knees up to her chest as she watched her friend shuffle toward her. She wasn’t sure where to start, but she decided to go with the obvious. “I’m sorry for my behavior for the past several months.”

Remi came closer and climbed onto the bed. “It’s okay. I’m sure you had your reasons. I wasn’t a very good friend either. I’ve been so wrapped up in Kade that I didn’t reach out to you as much as I should have. I was a bad friend. I’m sorry too.”

“You have no reason to be sorry, but thank you.” Carlee beamed at her. “Atlas told me you’re with Kade.”

Remi grinned. “Yeah. He’s the best.”

“I’m so happy for you.”

Remi pointed at the pile of packages. “What’s all this?”

Carlee smiled. “Christmas apparently. Atlas ordered it. I have no idea what it all is. You can help me open everything.”

Remi clapped her hands together. “How fun.” She tucked her dark hair behind her ear and licked the edge of her black-painted lips. “So… You and my brother?”

Carlee shrugged. “He says so, but he hasn’t addressed the detail of him leaving. He’s only here for a month. I need to guard my heart carefully.”

Remi took her hand. “Why do I suspect it’s already too late for that?”

Carlee sighed. “You’re probably right.”

“Maybe he wants to take you with him?”

Carlee shrugged again. “I don’t belong in the city. This is my home.”

“Well, we don’t have to worry about it today. Let’s dig into these packages.” She nearly bounced.

“Do you want me to tell you about the last few months first?”

“Nope. You can tell me after.” Remi grinned, her white teeth in stark contrast to her black lipstick. The perfect dark liner around her eyes was stunning on her. It had never been Carlee’s style, but she’d always thought Remi pulled off the Goth look more than anyone she knew.

Carlee was relieved her best friend didn’t seem angry. This wasn’t going to go as badly as Carlee had pictured.

Remi held up a random package. “This one. Do this one first.”

Carlee giggled as she rose onto her knees, nearly bouncing as she took it.
