Christian apologists might argue that these seemingly conflicting passages can be reconciled by a passage from Paul: "I am not ashamed of the gospel: it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who has faith: the Jew first and also to the Greek" (Rom. 1:16). The quote from Matthew where Jesus is interested in only saving the Jews reflects, it said, an earlier period of time when Jesus was preaching only to Jews. But other passages where he teaches universal salvation reflect his later expanded conception of his mission. In reply it can be argued that Paul's words hardly explain Jesus' harsh command: "Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." Moreover, it is not clear why Jesus would want to or need to save the Jews first. Why should a completely just savior of humanity want to save some religious group first? Jesus should have no favorites. Why would the Son of God need to start salvation with any one religious group and then expand his efforts? The Son of God could have had thousands of disciples saving Jews and Gentiles at the same time. He was not limited to twelve.?
