Chapter 6

It had been a while since Sakota fenced. The PT deck was spacious and allowed for a lot of room to maneuver, though Alistair liked a tight area. She tightened the strap of her tunic and pulled her sabre mask down. “Nothing like a little celebratory fencing, eh, Alistair?”

“Indeed. I had no doubt the meeting would go in our favor, though we’ve got our work cut out for us.”

“Yeah, we do. Well, you do the research, and I’ll keep poking Astraeus’s brain. You know, we’re going to have to try fencing without gravity sometime.”

“I like my feet firmly planted when I’m awake. Though it would be interesting.”

“What do you think about this? I still can’t make heads or tails of Astraeus.”

“Let me ask you this. Do you like him?”

She lifted her saber, then paused. “I do. He’s got a good heart.”

Alistair circled her. “Well, then. I know of only three truths which are accurate. En guard.” They assumed the sparring stance. “Everyone wants to be treated with human dignity. Though he wasn’t born on Earth, the same applies to Astraeus. Second, human beings are interested in progression and preservation. We have to preserve the basic moral compass we’ve got in civilized society while making room for different ways of thinking. Some people are better at accepting that fact than others.”

She met his parry with ease. “What’s the third?”

He lunged, catching her off guard.

“Good lord, Alistair.”

He chuckled. “I may be old, Petal, but never slow. The third is this. We must expect the unexpected. Life has a way of upending everything we know, or think we know. He may be charming, but don’t let your guard down.”
