CHAPTER SEVEN

KAT glanced at her reflection in the windows of the bank. She almost didn’t recognize herself.

The dress was shorter and tighter than her usual style. Having most of her thighs bared to the world wasn’t a comfortable sensation, and the pull of silk across her bust was just shy of obscene.

Several men noticed her walk from the car. Their stares made her feel strange. Sexy, powerful…embarrassed.

The looks some of the wives threw her helped offset it. Kat comforted herself with the knowledge that she’d be able to explain her uncharacteristic behavior once the skunk, Filcher, was behind bars and she had her inheritance.

The bank’s security guard opened the door for her.

“Thank you.” Kat tried to ignore his attention to her legs.

She continued to the secretary’s desk and was immediately shown into Chad’s office.

Kat strode toward the point of no return and shut the door behind her. She turned to see Chad approaching her with outstretched arms.

“Kat, what a pleasant surprise.” He gripped her hands.

She flashed him what she hoped was a brilliant smile. Butterflies tumbled drunkenly over each other in her stomach. She was face-to-face with a possible crook and she needed to play the part of seductress.

Right.

Daniel’s face flashed through her mind. He was counting on her, his reputation depended on her. A lot of people needed her to pull this off.

“I hope this isn’t a bad time.” She resisted pulling away. “I was in town shopping and thought I’d see how the search was going.”

He looked her up and down, his gaze lingering on her chest. “Is that a new dress?”

“It is—how kind of you to notice.” Kat pulled her hands free and executed a spin. Kat struck a pose. “You don’t think it’s a bit much? It’s not my normal thing, but I was in the mood for something different.”

“Oh…no…it’s…” Chad ran a finger under his collar, pulling it away from his pasty neck, “…charming. Makes the most of your…coloring.”

She crossed to the chair in front of his desk. Sitting, she demurely tugged down on the skirt. It stretched to cover another quarter inch of her skin.

“I’m afraid it’s shorter than it appeared on the mannequin.” She begged silent forgiveness from Mrs. Conrad who’d raised her eyebrows when Kat asked her to hem it to such an ungodly short length.

Kat looked up through her lashes to see Chad’s gaze fastened on her thigh. He licked his thin lips.

She needed to distract him before he pounced. “Is there any word on my aunt’s money?”

Chad walked behind his desk and sat in the chair. He rolled it closer to Kat, but he couldn’t reach her hand across the wide expanse of wood.

“I wish I had good news for you, but I’m afraid nothing has come up…uh,” he glanced at his lap and shifted in his chair, “since the last time we met. I’m sorry.”

Kat ran her tongue over her lips and gave him her best wide-eyed pout. “How much time do I have before the bank will take action?”

“Two, three weeks at the most.
