27. Peyton Price

For the next four months, I am single-minded. My one and only goal is to control every element of my power, including every capability of my human body. If I’m going to kill Slade Baines, I have to be stronger, faster, and more brutal than him. I have to reach into every facet of my power and draw it out to its full extent.

Just as he promised, Lachlan becomes my shadow, a constant protective force. Like the trailing smoke that rises above a dying campfire, he quietly and unobtrusively follows me everywhere I go during the day. He waits for me at the bottom of the staircase every morning and doesn’t let me out of his sight until I return to the attic at night.

Despite that, I catch his non-verbal communications with Ashley whenever she passes us in the hallways. There’s not a moment that I don’t feel guilty that I’m taking up all of his attention—the attention he used to spend protecting her—but I justify it in my mind. Once the assassins are no longer a threat, I will rid us of Hadrix and his family once and for all. Then Lachlan and Ashley can be together like they want to be.

During my lessons with Harrison, I learn how to handle a dagger like an expert. After that, a sword. He talks me through all the different kinds of firearms, finally offering me two state-of-the art handguns that he tells me will fire reliably no matter what conditions I find myself in—extreme heat, water, you name it. The Draven insignia on the handle doesn’t escape me.

Harrison’s smile is cold. “Draven’s company designs the best.”

Soon, I’m not only able to shoot a gun, but also fire accurately while running, jumping, and levitating. The room is large enough for me to carry out nearly any maneuver—and Harrison insists that I need to know how to move in more confined spaces because the fight with Slade will be at close range.

I also train using my human strength in case my power fails me at any time. Slowly adjusting to the weight of carrying heavy weapon belts around my body, I learn how to draw, use, and control my weapons with lightning speed when I need them, even as a human.

Slowly but surely, my strength and stamina increase so that every combat move I perform while I’m a Fury, I can also carry out while I’m human—except levitate of course.

In the afternoon, I have individual lessons either with Mallard—although his eyes are glazed and he only teaches me about my power now—or Vulture, whose presence I grit my teeth and bear because she tells me everything I need to know about Slade Baines and Hunter Cassidy: from the layout of the street where Hunter lives to the supernaturals she and Slade have been seen with. She also reinforces what Hadrix said: Slade lives in a Realm that I won’t be able to get into and there is a protective shield around the street where Hunter lives.
