Homemade marbles

From mere modeling clay, these little kids were able to establish a more substantial understanding of the Earth around them than most adults have, and from there, a deeper appreciation for the wonder of creation in general. A “Clock of Eras” gives the kids a clear visual depiction of the relative amounts of time it took for Earth to form and for different types of life to develop, while a 100 foot “Long Black Strip” dramatically illustrates the expanse of time since Earth’s creation, tipped at the very end by a ½-inch narrow white band – the proportionate time of human existence. As my daughter put it one day, time is hard to imagine. Space is hard to imagine. These tools make you feel small, but still very important to the whole thing working out right. Humility, I believe that’s called, and more than a little bit of perspective.

Combining sensory work and learning, the illustration shows homemade marbles which we kneaded, mixed, and rolled out of polymer clay, then baked hard. The lesson included the effects of temperature on states of matter, the historical game of marbles and how kids played in the past, color-mixing, and finally, the construction of a marble run to watch centripetal force in action.
