Chapter 8

Kealy

I woke up early Monday morning to get Wen Jasmine ready for preschool and to get myself ready for work. I was extremely tired, since I hadn’t gotten home until 1am. Six hours of sleep had never been enough for me. I usually needed eight or nine to function properly. It was nothing a little coffee wouldn’t fix though.

I decided to leave her hair curly and helped her into a blue and white dress, white socks, and blue sneakers. I made sure her hair was well moisturized and then sent her in the bathroom to brush her teeth while I got myself dressed.

I chose a tan cardigan with an orange top underneath, an orange statement necklace, black pants, and a pair of tan flats. I pinned my hair into a messy ponytail and then checked on Wen Jasmine. She was done brushing her teeth, so I helped her pack her book bag, and then I went into the kitchen to pack her lunchbox. Zhen was in there already. She had fixed up the couch so it looked like she hadn’t slept there, and she held out Wen Jasmine’s lunchbox and a cup of coffee for me.

“Already packed it for her! I made her a macaroni tuna salad, and I cut up some fresh strawberries for her. There’s also some cheese and crackers in there.” Zhen smiled brightly, and I couldn’t believe my eyes.

“Wow, Zhen! Thank you so much. You’re amazing!” I was so grateful to have her around. She was really above and beyond my expectations. I was extremely happy that I had hired her, and she made my coffee sweet, just like I liked it.

“Someone got home a little late last night,” she teased. “I hope it went well.”

“I had a great time. Are you still good to pick up Wen Jasmine from preschool at 5pm?” I was lucky to have found a spot in Shanghai’s Head Start program that had extended hours, so Wen Jasmine didn’t need to be picked up until 5pm. Unfortunately, I had tutoring appointments until 7pm, so I couldn’t pick her up. But that’s why I’d hired Zhen.

The preschool schedule that Head Start had set up for Wen Jasmine was phenomenal. Technically, the children could be picked up starting at 3:45pm, but I wanted Wen Jasmine to really get to know her classmates and make friends, especially since she was new. And I wanted her to pick up on Chinese. She was great with repeating things back to me after I said it to her, but she always preferred to use English when talking. Which was fine, because we had been in America for four years after all, but now that we were in Shanghai, I wanted to improve her Chinese while she was still young so she wouldn’t have a difficult time when she got older.

“Of course! I’ll be there a bit early just to make sure she isn’t waiting around.”

“Perfect!” I checked the time to see it was 7:30am, and I had to get Wen Jasmine to preschool and then get to my appointment by 8am.
