Chapter eighteen

The fae nettle wasn’t strong enough to overcome the jolt of need that struck me when Rien opened the door. A jittery, almost painful desire erupted like I was going to push my way inside and slam myself against him. He wore a blue button down over a white shirt and dark jeans. An easy, teasing smile slipped into place as he waved his arm to invite us in. I sucked my bottom lip into my mouth, unable to look away, until Gwen elbowed me in the rib.

“Ouch,” I groaned, rubbing the spot. She gave me a withering look, which doused the fire being stoked in my stomach. Right, she could feel what I was feeling. I averted my eyes from Rien and followed Sloane and Gwen into his room.

His room was enormous, almost a mini apartment. The entrance flowed into a living room area with leather couches around a huge TV. To the left there was a full kitchen with granite countertops. There were two doors to the right, the bedroom and bathroom, I assumed.

Gwen whistled and spun around in the room. “Nice room.”

Rien looked uncomfortable as he grabbed the back of his neck. “They upgraded me when I checked in.”

The hotel saw the name Astora and put him in a fancy suite. It was kind of endearing that he was shy about it.

The couch was occupied by a lanky, brown-haired guy, dressed similar to Rien. He gave us a slight wave before ducking his head and looking away.

“Hope you don’t mind. I invited August to come with us,” Rien said as he retrieved some bottles from the cabinets in the kitchen. “Help yourself to whatever you want.” A plethora of assorted alcohols and mixers filled the countertop.

“Why do you have so much alcohol?” Sloane asked. She went to the counter, poured herself a drink, and handed one to me as well.

“My friends checked into my room the first day, and they kind of stocked up and left it here,” he answered. I remembered the group from the first night who had stumbled into the bar. I wondered how Rien had wrangled them as they were half belligerent by the time I left.

A smile formed on my face as I remembered how we flirted that night. I caught his eye, and he grinned at me as if remembering the night too. I held his stare instead of blushing like I normally would. Apparently my powers also made me bold.

August got up and rounded the counter. “Let’s do shots. I called the car, and they will be here in ten minutes.”

“Oh! I think I like you, August,” Sloane said, smiling, and gripped his upper arm. August immediately looked away; the tips of his ears reddened at Sloane’s attention.

“Are you in the cert program with Rien and Amaya?” Sloane asked. She fluttered her eyelashes at him, which seemed to make him more flustered. Flirting Sloane had entered the building. I’d seen enough of her in the clubs we’d gone to over the last few weeks.
