When participants engage in printmaking, it is explained to them that printmaking, by its tradition, makes several copies of the same image, but monoprinting is a form of printmaking that uses a matrix such as a woodblock, lithograph stone, or copper plate, and produces impressions that are unique. I explain to participants that, “You are all unique and wonderful, and so your monoprints will reflect your uniqueness. An art therapist might use monoprinting to help you focus on why you are unique and special, as well as encouraging spontaneity.”
