Chapter 16

"Stored up Winterfest and birthday presents?" Sadie questioned, smiling as she wondered what the boxes contained?

"Or their possessions and dowries?" Leon added, nodding his head. "Do you expect little girls to give up their dolls, just because they almost died?" This got a surprised laugh out of James, as he stood and watched, Sadie having translated it for him.

"These stasis chambers are different from the ones in the Valley. Give me a few seconds," Ryes suggested, having stepped over to see Calla sleeping within her chamber. She closed her eyes as she checked the mechanism over, using her Talent. "Ah, we're going to have to do it the ol' fashion way. Their chambers are just short of failing. They can't be cycled," she finally stated, opening her eyes.

"Got a prybar around here?" Sadie asked Ellen. She laughed as she turned to Keels. He gave her a nod in understanding, then trotted off. After a few moments, he returned with a prybar in hand.

"Okay, Leon. You and I'll pry this open, then Maren can take over from there," Keels ordered.

"Hey guys, you keep forgetting I can open them now, all by myself," Ryes reminded them, surprised the others had taken over the lead from her.

"You might need to help Maren, so save what remains of your power, just in case," Ellen countered, grinning at the look on her face. Ryes nodded as Maren gave her a wink, almost smiling again. She stepped over to his side, ready as they set the prybar and began to pull. James added his own strength to their efforts, and it popped open suddenly; the lid clattering to the floor behind it. Maren quickly reached within, pulling the small girl out. He sat down upon the floor with her in his arms, as Ryes added in her own Healing and Booster Talents for his use, kneeling behind him. After a few minutes, her body began to relax, then shortly thereafter as she opened her eyes. Saree was there to reassure her that she was all right. She saw Maren's face above her own and she laughed happily as she reached up to touch his cheek.

"Miti! You came home!" she cried, tears in her eyes at seeing a familiar face.

"He is not Miti, honey. His name is Maren, and he is Healing you," Saree told her, seeing the sudden questions in her eyes, as she didn’t know where she was now.

"Please translate for me," James requested of Sadie. She looked surprised but nodded her head. "Your mother and father entrusted you to us, because your father couldn’t Heal you and your friend. Your mother asked Ryes if she would take you and your friend into her home, to raise you both as her own daughters. Since Ryes will adopt you, Maren will be your cousin, too." He hoped he wasn't speaking much above her level, but she looked like a bright child.

"Who is my new mother, Ryes?" she asked, seeing how many people were now in this strange, tiny room.
