Chapter 14

Maybelle and Nadia were sitting around the tv watching an episode of Wheel of Fortune, when Lena came into the room. Lena looked around and down the hall. Jack was nowhere to be found.

“Where’s Jack?”

“His daddy wanted him to come home, so he left.” Maybelle said.

“Oh,” she said vacantly, “Okay, well dinner is ready.”

“Help Big Mama up, babies.”

While Nadia helped her up from the chair, Lena came to her side and offered her arm. Maybelle groaned. Her frail body trembled as she attempted to pull herself out of the chair.

She winced and gasped. “Lord Jesus.”

“What’s wrong?” Lena asked.

“Something hurts.”

“What hurts? Your chest?”

“No, something different. In my stomach.”

“Show me.”

Maybelle straightened up. Beads of sweat decorated her forehead. Her body trembled steadily. She placed two fingers right above her belly button near the center of her stomach.

“Here.”

Lena placed her fingers there and pressed lightly. Maybelle retracted in pain. Lena didn’t know what it was that she felt, but it was hard like a stone. She gently lowered Maybelle back into the chair and knelt down beside her.

Maybelle trembled. Her eyes clenched shut. She looked to be in extreme pain.

“Give me my phone.” Lena pointed to her purse. Nadia fished the phone out of her purse and handed it to Lena. She was about to call an ambulance when Maybelle touched her lightly on the arm.

“I’m okay.”

“You are not okay. We need to get you to a hospital.”

“No hospitals. I’ve had enough of them.”

“But something is wrong, and I don’t know what it is.”

“Get your sister. Let her.”

“She’s not practicing. I’m calling an ambulance.”

“No!” Maybelle raised her voice as best as she could. “I don’t want no hospitals. You understand?”

“But—”

“No hospitals, Magdalena.” Maybelle reached and stroked Lena’s cheek, softening the sting of her rebuke.

Lena covered her hand with her own. “Alright.” She lowered her eyes in defeat. “Please go get Janine, Sweet Pea.”

Nadia disappeared quickly into the kitchen and reappeared less than a minute later with Janine. Janine rushed over to Maybelle. “What’s wrong?”

“I don’t know. We were helping her out of the chair and then she started feeling a lot of pain in her stomach. I touched the place where she was experiencing pain and it was hard.”

“Hard?”

“Yes,” Lena tried to keep the fear out of her voice. “Hard like there’s a rock in it or something.”

Janine sat on the ottoman and rolled it close to Maybelle. “Go to my room and get me the small black bag sitting on my desk.” Lena ran down the hall and got the bag and came quickly to her side.

“Here.”

“Thanks.” Janine placed the bag on the floor beside her and unzipped it. She reached in and pulled out her stethoscope.

“What’s going on with her?” Lena asked.

“I don’t know yet. Please just give me a moment.”

“We need to get her to the hospital. You’re not a real doctor.”

“I am a doctor and I know what I’m doing.”

“This is insane, she’s in pain and we have to get her to a hospital before she—”

Janine spun around. “Lena, that’s enough!” She nodded her head, hoping that Lena would stand down.
