Chapter 18

After lunch with her parents, Bree felt marginally better than she had in the morning. Jon and Rylee hadn’t been happy with her actions the night before, but they understood. The three of them talked and Bree had apologized for worrying them and for putting the team in more danger. They’d been concerned, rather than angry. That was somehow worse, but Bree understood it. After lunch, she made her way to Medical only to find that Sawyer had already been released. She still felt guilty for her injury and needed to see for herself that Sawyer was okay.

Bree knocked on Sawyer’s door and waited for it to open. When it did, she was prepared for the scowl Sawyer directed at her. She sighed, expecting Sawyer to yell at her or to slam the door in her face, but she did neither. She left the door open and turned around, leaving Bree standing in the open doorway. She followed her inside.

“I’m sorry,” Bree called out to Sawyer’s back.

Sawyer said nothing as she walked into the kitchen. She went to the refrigerator and pulled out two beers. She walked back to where Bree stood and wordlessly handed her one. Bree noticed that Sawyer avoided looking her in the eye. Still, a beer was more than she’d expected. Where was the angry, impatient Sawyer who snapped at people when things were going badly? Bree almost missed that woman. At least she’d known how to handle her. This one was a mystery.

“I was stupid,” Bree said.

Now Sawyer did look at Bree, raising a brow.

“It was reckless, and I wasn’t thinking,” Bree went on. “I don’t know what else to say, except that I’m sorry.”

Sawyer took a drink of her beer and seemed to study the label for a moment.

“You could promise to never do anything so monumentally ignorant ever again,” she said. “That would be a start.”

Bree nodded, but Sawyer wasn’t finished.

“You could tell me what the hell has been going on with you for the last month. Hell, the last 4 months.” Sawyer’s voice was hard, but beneath her anger, Bree could hear the hurt.

Bree’s shoulders sagged, and she found that she couldn’t look at Sawyer. She didn’t know how to put into words something that she didn’t understand herself.

“I don’t know,” she said. She knew it wasn’t enough. The sound of disgust Sawyer made confirmed that she felt the same.

“You need to figure it out, Bree. You could have died last night, and you didn’t seem to care.” Sawyer’s words scored a direct hit and she knew it. “You disobeyed orders and charged into a situation where you knew you’d be outnumbered. Did you even think about your family? Declan? Your friends? Me? You may not care whether you live or die but think about the people you’d be leaving behind.”

Bree’s heart clenched, and she felt dangerously close to tears. “I do care,” she said in a small voice. “I don’t have a death wish. I don’t know what’s going on with me.
