Chapter 14

The phone rang early Friday morning before Annie had arrived and, thinking it was an emergency, I hurried downstairs in my pajamas and bare feet to answer it.

“April Fool!” It was the unmistakable voice of Roger Lewis.

“Oh, you!” I said while he laughed before hanging up.

Exasperated and with ice-cold feet, I went upstairs and got back under the covers. It was not even six o’clock. He had gone to some trouble getting up early to pull his prank, but I didn’t have the ingenuity to think of something good to get back at him with.

Later, when I was getting dressed, the phone rang again, only this time Annie had arrived and by the frustrated tone in her voice, I suspected that Roger had struck again. That did it. Coming into the kitchen, I heard her muttering and thought to enlist her in my scheme.

“Another April Fool call?” I enquired.

“That Roger!” she said from the sink.

“Now, Annie, let’s have bygones be bygones. I think we ought to make Roger a sponge cake.”

She whirled around and looked at me as if I were crazy.

I picked up the damp sponge from the sink and asked her, “What do you think—chocolate or vanilla icing?”

“Definitely chocolate. His favorite. The little devil.” She went to the pantry to look for confectioner’s sugar while I took the butter out of the refrigerator.

“That’s a waste of good food,” she said. “we’ll use the Crisco instead,” and handed me the can from the pantry.

“Yummy! Let’s put a cherry on top to make it extra special. It’ll be worth it. Just make sure none of the ladies sees it first.”
