6 Beyond linear regressionNon-additivity, non-linearity and mediation

6.1 Introduction

Sometimes the complexities of life entail that the linear regression model paints a too simplistic picture of reality. If under these circumstances we hold on to the linear model, the estimate of b1 for x1 on y could be biased. The purpose of this chapter is to illustrate the ways in which we may adapt the linear regression model to these more complicated circumstances. We first address the violations of assumption B1 (section 6.2) and B2 (sections 6.3 to 6.5). Finally, section 6.6 takes up the issue of mediation which will be explained when we get there.
