Chapter 16: As Good a Time as Ever

Ether’s words stuck in Nova’s head all day. One second, the truth behind the Samou’s apprehension toward her played on repeat. The next, her advice on how to handle the situation came rising to the surface.

“Now is as good a time as ever,” she had said.

The sun was already setting in the distance and her first full day awake in the Samou camp was coming to a close. It had dragged by painfully slowly. There wasn't much to see in the camp itself. Everyone there was busy with their own tasks, and she was the only one without a role to play in the group.

“Because I’m not part of the group,” she observed.

It wasn’t long after breakfast that Apollo had to leave to return to the Capital. They were still searching for the imposter’s hideout, and everyone was on edge. She had wanted to go with him, but he insisted that she stay behind.

“It’s too dangerous,” he said. “The imposters will be looking for you.”

“They’ll look for me here, too,” she pointed out.

“They won’t get into my camp,” he said firmly.

“How do you know they’re not already here?” she asked.

"I have protocol in place to ensure that if any of my warriors are taken and an imposter put in their place, I will know."

“What is it?” she asked.

“I cannot tell you. It is something we discussed before leaving our planet, and we have all sworn not to speak of it as long as we are on Earth. It’s safer that way. We can be sure that no one outside of our tribe overhears us.”

He was an intelligent leader, she realized. He was organized and confident. His men admired and respected him. Even despite his temporary lapse in judgment, it was still evident that they would follow him into any battle, no questions asked.

After Apollo had left, Nova walked through the camp a time or three, watching silently as the Samou went about their days. There was an order to everything they did. It wasn’t a rigid order, though. It was fluid. They seemed happy to work alongside one another. Even if they were working to prepare for war.

Their training, run by Raze, was intense. Nova sat on the sidelines as she watched them meet in hand-to-hand combat, then in a flash, take to the sky in a ball of smoke. They never used weapons. None of the Samou ever had. Firearms were useless to them. Dragons couldn’t use them, nor did they have any need of them.

After another lap through the camp, she found herself wanting some time alone. That’s what led her to the pond. Now that she was there alone, though, she found herself wishing someone else were around.

Not just anyone else, though.

Him.

“I miss him,” she whispered as she slumped down and kicked off her shoes.

Dangling her feet in the water, she leaned back on her palms and sighed loudly.

“He’s only been gone for eight hours, and I miss him.”

“It’s a good thing he’s back then,” Apollo said, walking up behind her.
