“I’M SORE.” I groaned and rubbed my right shoulder. “No one told me last night would be a workout.”

Vince stepped up behind me and took over massaging for me. “It’s not—for normal people.”

“Says the Hulk.” I chuckled at the memory of him throwing the ax with more force than anyone else in the building. “At least I hit the bullseye.”

He squeezed my deltoid a bit too hard, and I squirmed. “Every single one I threw stuck.”

“I guess strength means nothing for accuracy,” Skyler teased from across the kitchen island.

“Last time, I got better by the end of the night, but yesterday was rough.” Luca said. “Except for Gavin. Maybe that’s his strength.”

“Axe throwing?” Gavin snickered. “I don’t think so.”

“You don’t have any ideas yet?” Noah asked him.

“No, I’ve tried all the obvious ones—flight, speed, strength, mind-reading.”

“Mind reading? That’s a thing?” I blurted.

“Yeah, it’s rare, but we’ve seen it before,” he replied.

Miranda strode into the kitchen and poked the cake cooling on the counter. “It’s time to ice.”

Tessa and Daniel came in as Miranda stacked the second round cake on the first layer. Red velvet with cream cheese frosting was so tempting. I was grateful Gavin’s favorite wasn’t something like lemon or carrot cake. Those were fine, but red velvet is always a perfect choice.

As soon as she was finished, she lit the candles and placed the cake in front of Gavin. Daniel started us off singing “Happy Birthday,” and we all joined in. Gavin’s cheeks turned pink, then red, then he was gone.

“Gavin!” I screamed and blinked, thinking maybe my eyes were playing tricks. Everyone stopped singing and searched the space, frantic.

“What?”

I heard his voice but couldn’t see him. Then, Tessa and Daniel started laughing.

Miranda shook her head. “We figured it out.”

“I wonder if it’s only when he’s embarrassed.” Luca chuckled.

“That would be hard for him. It doesn’t take much to make him uncomfortable.”

“What are you guys talking about?” Gavin’s voice pleaded.

“Son, you’re invisible,” Daniel said calmly.

“What? How?”

All we could do is hear the panic and confusion in his voice.

“Were you thinking about wanting to be invisible while we were singing?” Gavin’s dad asked.

“Yeah,” the sheepish, disembodied voice said.

“Well, now you know how to activate it,” Tessa teased. “Try letting go of those feelings or thinking of being present.”

We all watched the empty area where he’d once been, and after a few silent seconds, he reappeared. He stared down at his hands when we cheered. His head shot up. “I’m back?”

“Yes, can you not tell the difference?” Daniel asked.

“No, I look the same to me.” Gavin’s voice sounded worried. “How can I control it if I don’t even know when it’s happening?”

“Time and practice. I’m sure you’ll notice the change eventually,” Tessa’s reassurance calmed him. “Congratulations, honey.”

“Congratulations!” We cheered all together.

After cake, Miranda started cleaning the kitchen, and Tessa and Daniel excused themselves. Skyler jumped from his seat and clapped his hands. “All right, the day is yours, Gavin. What do you want to do?”

“Well, why don’t we do presents?” I asked.
