FINDING THREE POSITIVES
Rejecting a new idea is a normal reaction â even more so when the idea is about an issue close to your heart. Unfortunately, by doing so you send out signals that youâre not receptive to change. Not only do you close off that avenue for exploration, but you also tread on the other personâs ego.
Nobody enjoys having their ideas squashed, so this person is likely to react defensively, especially if they also feel strongly about the issue. You risk getting into the sort of âidea-killingâ argument described on page 66. To stop this happening, you need to take a deep breath and be constructive.
Thereâs an extremely effective tool that can take the negativity out of idea-receiving. If someone offers an idea to which you feel hostile, the rule is that you have to first build on it by deliberately looking for three good things that you can say about it, before you allow yourself to say anything negative.
