1. Hone your listening skills.

Although we are often told to learn how to communicate in a relationship, the most important part of communication is listening. You cannot give an appropriate answer unless you understand the question. You should be as effective at listening as you are at expressing yourself. It is better to understand the perspective of the other person before identifying a solution. In fact, it is better to listen to the other person than to yourself. The beginning of getting a solution to that conflict is making the person to feel heard. Good listening also helps a person to bridge the gap between him and the other person.

Unfortunately, not everyone knows how to actively listen to the other. You might think that you are listening but your brain is busy formulating the next answer. It might be telling you that the other person is wrong regardless of what they say. In extreme cases, your mind might be engaged by other things apart from the topic at hand. It is easy to be lost in your own opinion, stay entrenched in a defensive position to the extent that you cannot hear the opinions of the other person.
