UPDATE
One might hope that the question of who got to America first would remain within the scope of well-known groups capable of coming from across the Atlantic or Pacific (Kennewick Man, for example), but that, unfortunately, still is not the case. Some recent writers have even suggested that Atlantis was in Lake Titicaca in Boliviaâsurely a long reach. Even the arguments about the authenticity of the Kensington Stone are still hot. However, there have been recent updates on Viking matters (Fitzhugh and Ward 2000) and the Mormon tablets (Larson 1996). My own recent writings deal with both the history of the putative Asian Bering Strait crossings and the intellectual history of that pathway to America (Williams 2002a, 2002b).
My research activities now have turned to other aspects of the history of archaeology beyond Fantastic Archaeology (1991). One of my recent publications debunks the myth of the Moundbuilders (2002c). Despite much literature to the contrary (and my own previous view), I now realize that the non-Indian Moundbuilder was a very small minority view. Most nineteenth-century scholars really did believe that the American Indians were indeed the creators of these great earthen monuments.
My coedited volume with David Browman (2002) grew out of the Second Gordon R. Willey Biennial Symposium on the History of Archaeology and covers a wide range of topics, including the putative Bering Strait crossings and the intellectual history of that pathway to America (Williams 2002a, 2002b). Browman and I now are researching the history of the development of archaeology at Harvard University, relying considerably on archival documentation, covering the seven decades from 1860 to 1930.
