Day 195 Scrabble

So I got back after a brief visit with my mother, to one of my random on the road homes. Another Hyatt Regency.

I was too tired to be phased by that little there and back jaunt. It was only about ten o'clock at night, anyway. I had a whole evening free, still plenty of time to get into some trouble. Yay.

We'd pull out in the morning for a hella drive, so...

And I finally gave up on the third set of insistent knocking.

Kayla stuck her foot in my door. "Why won't you let me in?"

"I'm still resting my voice," I said, which was true. But I was also inexplicably antsy and unable to concentrate. After connecting with Drew and updates and reassurance, I had been entertaining the idea of hooking up with Fred and Ray and going on the hunt for fresh meat. But Ray kept saying he wanted to talk to me first.

Ah...a no-go on that one.

I'd said yes earlier but told them "No," through the door, together as a duo and separately. Sometimes it pays to be a diva.

Kayla crossed her arms and pouted. Then she pointed to the floor and the Reebok bag with her games in it and a six pack of sweating canned Sprite. "Business meeting go all right?"

"Oh, it was a blast." I covered my fake yawn with an elaborate hand and then bowed and swept my arm wide. "Your majesty."

She carried her stuff in and set it on the dresser. Then she worked her drinks into the mini fridge, around all the fruits and crap I probably wouldn't even eat. "Let's party," she said. "Quietly."

We ordered expensive and tacky room service.

We didn't talk much, which was good, but apparently she needed somebody, too. She unpacked her beat up old travel Scrabble, and we sat more or less cross legged on the bed.

We played and I lost bad. The computer can beat me, but not many people can since I love words so much. But she was good.

And true, my brain felt pretty vacant. That was my excuse, anyway.

"Short drive tomorrow," she said, and that got a good laugh. We kept studying the board, although it was our third game and we were bored with it. Even by allowing all sorts of dirty words and sex terms, all games get boring eventually.

I nodded and sipped some more of that throat tea. By tomorrow, I should be almost as good as new, if I was careful.

She cleared her throat. "So what are you thinking now?"

I glanced over at her and I don't know why, but it just rushed out. "You know, Kayla, look how we've trashed up this classic game." I shook my hair like Jane Russell. "I think sex plays too big a role in my life."

She nearly spit Sprite. "What? It's just a game, and besides, sexiness is your job, mofo, that's about seventy five per cent of what you're paid for."

I hung my head. "You're calling me a whore?"

"No, you're a performer.
