When we were little children, we would write

as children do, with pencil tips. We wrote

our stories in great loops, each practiced letter

scaled to the size of the thumb.

From my shoulder Jacob read out words

and I pressed down the words. The words

were my pressed flowers, the words

would flatten as flowers do. The pencil left

light markings, easily erased, like everything

I touched back then. I did no harm

with words. But outstretched like a stinger

in my father’s fist would be the Cornwall pen:
