Chapter Six

“I heard today at Mrs. McMaster’s seamstress shop that Gladys Winchell and her daughter, Winnifred, will start teaching Sunday school soon,” Kari said quietly as she cradled Lara in her arms, while Anita kept her gaze fixed upon the book in her lap. “A pity you didn’t go see Reverend Murray the day after he dined with us and volunteer for the position yourself. It would have been lovely for you to have something to help fill your time—”

“You know I’ve never been very good with children,” Anita said almost under her breath, though it was not true, really, because she’d had little experience with them. She loved children, especially babies; Lara’s cooing making her look up and smile tenderly at her sweet little niece.

A fleeting smile, though. Kari’s news as they sat together on a settee in the drawing room had caused a pang in Anita’s heart as intense as when Chase had rejected her ten days ago—dear Lord, where had the time gone?

She sighed heavily in answer to her own question, which made Kari reach out to clasp her hand.

“I wish you’d come into town with me, Anita—if only to get you out of the house. It’s not healthy for you to have stayed cooped up for so long.”

“I thought that’s what I was supposed to do, get lots of rest,” she began, but Kari shook her head at her.

“Not for nearly two weeks! You even begged off from church last Sunday. I don’t know what Reverend Murray said to you when you went outside to speak to him, since you refuse to tell me—”

“It doesn’t matter, Kari, it’s over and done!” Anita cut in a bit too sharply, from the sudden hurt look on her sister’s face. Now she squeezed Kari’s fingers in apology. “I’m sorry. You mustn’t worry; it was only my overdramatic imagination running away with me again. I’m fine, truly, and I do believe these past days of resting and reading have done me a world of good.” Anita plopped her book atop the stack on the side table. “Shakespeare’s comedies, every one. Not a Romeo and Juliet among them!”

Again, Anita smiled to try and reassure her sister, but it was a lame effort and she knew it. So did Kari, her expression so filled with understanding that Anita had to blink back tears.

“You’re my baby sister, Anita. Please tell me what happened between you and Reverend Murray,” Kari pressed her gently. “I know you’re taken with him…it’s been as plain as day to all of us. You’ve always shared how you feel with me before.”

Anita nodded, feeling even worse now for not confiding in her beloved sister. “All right, but there’s really not much to tell. I hardly know him—”

“It doesn’t take long to fall in love, you know that. Look at me and Seth—and Ingrid, and Andreas. Who would have thought we would all find such happiness in Walker Creek? Of course, our dear Tante Kari had something to do with
