IT HAD been a busy few weeks as Tanner dealt with the legalities to do with buying the house. The negotiation had taken longer than he’d expected but finally the deal was done. He took care of getting the car serviced and arranged storage facilities for when his belongings were eventually shipped back to town. Tanner also spent some time with his parents and his sister, Ann. In the past ten years, he’d only been back on vacation a couple of times, hampered by the distance and leave restrictions, so it was great to get to know them all over again, face-to-face instead of over the Internet. He also used the time to catch up with old friends, although there weren’t that many who still lived in town.

“Would you look at that? Look what the cat dragged in,” Antonio’s cheerful voice called over the music and loud conversation in the restaurant. His friend approached and gave him a no-holds-barred hug. He then pulled back, holding Tanner at arm’s length so he could look him up and down. “Damn, Tanner. You’re looking good.”

Tanner smiled somewhat self-consciously under Antonio’s gaze. “You don’t look too bad yourself.” Antonio wore the additional decade well. His head of dark hair was still full, maybe worn a little shorter, but in a style that suited him. In his navy suit, white shirt, and striped tie, he looked professional, but the open collar and loose tie gave a relaxed feel so he didn’t look too out of place in the Italian restaurant.

“Why, thank you.” Antonio winked. “I’ll let Duncan know you said that. He needs reminding every now and then that he’s attached to the without-a-doubt best-looking guy in town.”

Tanner laughed. “That may well have been the case, but I’m back in town now so you might have lost that crown.”

“It’s a good thing I’ve already snagged my man, then, isn’t it?” Antonio chuckled and gave him a friendly pat on the arm. “C’mon. Let’s get a seat.”

From the vantage point of the booth at the back of the restaurant, Tanner surveyed the room. Not a lot had changed over the years—same clichéd background music, same red-and-white tablecloths, and same eager young kids serving. They ordered a couple of pasta dishes, crusty bread, a salad, and a bottle of wine.

“I can’t believe you suggested coming here. I would have thought that new restaurant at the golf club would have been more your scene,” Tanner said as he looked at the family groups and other diners before taking in Antonio’s appearance.

Antonio poured them each a glass of the red wine. “Don’t let the suit fool you. I’m happy with home-style and laid-back. This place still has the best food. And rest assured, this good Italian boy knows his stuff.”

“Excellent,” Tanner said as he raised his glass and touched it to Antonio’s. “Cheers.”

“Welcome back, buddy.” Antonio took a sip of the wine and placed the glass on the table. “I never thought I’d be drinking to your return. I somehow had you pictured as traveling the globe, seeking out your next adventure.
