Chapter Seventeen

In order to venture in and out of demonic realms, we need to grow stronger—physically, mentally, and magically.

These types of journeys are not for the faint of heart or the weak. They’re dangerous and deadly, often risking much more than one would imagine. At least that’s what Sydney has told me.

Along with the secret of Lillian being a witch, we have to hide the fact that we’re preparing to do things that the authorities at Harper Academy would never approve of.

And with that, we have our normal obligations, too.

School. Making sure I don’t fail. Birthday parties and all that regular human stuff.

I even sign up to volunteer some of my power to help maintain the shadow realm. If I’m going to dabble in demon things, I’d like to be semi-certain the students here will be safe from a demonic attack. We don’t need another repeat of a few months ago.

Not with so much on the line.

“I want you to start eating more. Protein and carbs specifically. We have to get some more meat on those bones.” Sydney pokes at my arm. “Deghan is going to work with you on sparring and fitness. Cam is going to keep us fed.”

At first, Sydney wanted to keep things between me and him. It took a little coaxing, but now he’s on board with Deg and Cam being involved. I trust them, so he trusts them. Having them on the inside will help with our cover story if we’re off doing angels know what. And it keeps Deghan occupied while Cameron works on his special day surprises.

“This is going to be fun.” Deghan winks at me and takes a bite of a sandwich that seems to appear out of nowhere. That guy is always ingesting something.

Classes were nearly impossible to get through today with the constant nagging of wanting to be done to focus on more important things.

Silas.

The bringing him back from the dead, or wherever the hell I may have banished him to—given our theories that he and Sydney’s parents are still out there somewhere.

I’ve tried to push away the pesky thought that keeps seeming to pop up.

How to save him without rescuing anyone else.

For now, I’ll focus on one impossible thing at a time.

“I spoke with Walker and scored some extra shadow realm sessions. Told him the time difference between there and here will help you with catching up on schoolwork. It’s not exactly a lie, but we’re going to have to really micromanage our schedules to get the most out of this.” Sydney flips through a notebook, scanning the pages with his pointer finger.

“What’s on the agenda for today?” I sip from the cup of bitter herbal tea Sydney brewed for us. Supposedly, it’s more potent than coffee and will aid in muscle recovery.

Sydney’s attention settles on Deghan. “Tomorrow is the full moon?”

“Yup. Eleven fifty-three p.m. to be exact. Kind of annoying if you ask me. Couldn’t it be at like nine in the morning to give me time to rage out and be back by dinner? Or at the very latest, bedtime.
