Chapter Thirteen
It took everything in Sam not to bounce up and down as the ice cream attendant handed her a cone full of green-chili ice cream. She even managed to wait until Grant accepted a deeply standard-sounding mango ice cream, and they made it out of the store before taking a lick. Closing her eyes, she let the surprising sweetness wash over her tongue, getting just a tiny kick of spice on the back end of her first taste. Opening her eyes, she sighed, as people Hula-Hooped in the park up the street.
âIs the ice cream weird?â Grant asked, watching her with a mix of apprehension and skepticism. âIt sounded weird to me.â
âIt is not weird. It is delicious.â Sam took another swipe at her ice cream before asking, âIs yours boring? It sounded boring.â
âWho thinks mango is boring?â Grant laughed, and the small knot in Samâs chest loosened. When Grant had suggested they get ice cream, she was worried that the spell cast by the Lost Key would be broken. But his sense of humor seemed to want to stick around.
âItâs boring when you have flavors like green chili, avocado, and black sesame to try,â Sam continued to needle. Half grinning over at him, she watched as he shook his head and tucked into his cone.
âI had no idea you had such strong feelings about ice cream.â

Sam felt heat creep into her cheeks. That trip had been a month ago. Grant had retained that little bit of information about her just so that he could recall it if the opportunity to make her happy ever magically presented itself. She was making a mental note to add it to the astonishingly fast-growing list of nice traits about Grant when she checked herself. How did she know he was listening for details about her? For all she knew, her overly enthusiastic roommate shipped them so hard that sheâd cornered him and drilled it into his brain.
Clearing his throat, Grant asked, âSo how did you get roped into throwing a party for your mom?â
âOof. Long story,â Sam sighed.
âWeâve got time. Unless you donât want to talk about it.â
She rarely wanted to talk about her mother, but something in the way Grant said it made Sam want to be honest with him. After all, their situations were different, but if anyone could understand struggling with family expectations, it was him. Taking a deep breath, she said, âI love my mom. I have to start with that, because otherwise the rest of this sounds kind of . . .â Pausing for
