Alex called her the next morning as promised. There was a little damage, but he needed to channel existing resources towards the repairs that needed to be made. This new change didn’t allow them time to see each other. “I need to make sure that by the New Year, everything’s back to normal.” He had told her. Although she welcomed the time to herself to process what was going on, she had to admit she missed him.

It was a pleasant surprise when he called her some days later and offered to take her to see the Peach Drop to usher in the New Year. His plan worked and everything was getting back to normal. The repairs were almost done and they’d be prepared to round up in a couple of days. To her surprise, Feranmi changed clothes so many times looking for just the right outfit. She wanted to look extra special. Seemed like he had the same goal, because when he came to her door, it took all she had not to reach for him. He looked and smelled divine, giving her goose bumps. Dressed in a pair of jeans and an argyle sweater, he looked like he just stepped out of a magazine.

They enjoyed the festivities and had dinner, but she noticed Alex wasn’t his usual self. No flirtatious smiles, smart quips, or playing with loose strands of her hair. He treated her like a friend. Wasn’t that what she wanted? At the stroke of midnight, he kissed her on her forehead instead of the lips which she longed for. When he dropped her off a little past midnight, he also declined coming in for a cup of coffee. She did ask that they stay focused, but never counted on it feeling like this. Her heart ached. Didn’t he give her ‘til her parents left to make up her mind? Or had something changed when she wasn’t paying attention?
