Chapter Eighteen

Ambrose

All four of my feckin’ brothers. Great. Just great.

They stared at me. Four pairs of eyes just like my own. Four dour mugs accusin’ me. I’d called Blaine because he’d be reasonable. Now, they were all here, gangin’ up on me like they had when we were lads.

Before I could say a word of protest, they burst in, fillin’ the space with their big bodies, then shuttin’ and lockin’ the door.

Blaine put his hand on my shoulder and looked me square in the eye. “I know you don’t like it. I know I’m disobeyin’ my Captain, but a good right-hand-man needs to know when to act, so I acted. We need to meet. All of us. In person. We need all hands on deck for this.”

His eyes strayed behind me. Caitlin—er—Christine stood with a couch pillow in her hand like she was about to use it to fend off bullets.

“We need to meet in private,” Blaine said.

“We can’t shove her in a closet,” I shot back. “She’s not a fuckin’ terrier.”

“Caitlin,” he said, “can you be a dove and go into the far bathroom and turn on the fan?”

She nodded.

“Thanks. We’ll come get ya when we’re done. Promise it won’t be long.” Such a charmer, Blaine. If he’d’ve winked, I would have knocked his block off, but he knew better.

When she’d gone, the boys walked into the master bedroom. I followed and shut the door.

“If you’re gonna say I told ya so, you can squash it.” I shot Conell a look.

He held up both hands in a surrender gesture. “Not lookin’ for a mea culpa. Just wantin’ to hear how we’re gonna deal with the lass.”

“Deal with her?” My blood immediately boiled. “If anyone’s gonna deal with her, it’s gonna be me.”

“Fine, fine,” Conell said. “As long as ya aren’t thinkin’ of keepin’ her.”

“And if I was?”

Conell went silent.

I turned to the rest of them. “And you? What do you think I should do?”

Devlon stared at me with his baby blues. His messy black hair needed a cut but that was the last thing on any of our minds right now. “She’s really Shane McNally’s kin?”

I nodded. “There’s no reason to lie about that. Can’t be somethin’ worse than being his daughter.”

“We should double-check, though,” Blaine added softly.

“Aye,” I agreed.

“And if she is?” Ean asked. His shirt was unbuttoned showin’ off the top of the large tattoo on his chest, the one he got after Mam passed. She was likely rollin’ over in her grave to see her boys with so much ink. “What do we do if she’s his daughter?” Ean asked again.

I shook my head. No answer was better than the one they wanted me to give.

“We can’t keep her,” Conell said. “She ain’t some lost terrier like ya said. She’s the daughter of our fuckin’ worst enemy.”

I shot him a dangerous look.

“Ambrose,” Blaine said in warnin’.

“You don’t know what Shane’ll do to her. What he’s already done to her.”

“So you’re willin’ to find out what they’ll do to us, to our business, to our family?” Conell shot back.
