Words are complete units of meaning, usable at the sentence level, that are made from a combination of level-1 elements, level-2 components, and in many cases, other words.

To be able to structurally analyze English words you must know 26 level-1 elements and thousands of prefixes, roots, and suffixes. If you do, you can not only split words into syllables, you can also guess the meaning of nearly any English word.

As different as it may appear to the beginner, written kanji is very similar in some ways, yet strikingly different in others.
