chapter 21

* * *

Tom stared at his wife's body, still and lifeless on the ground.

"BIA!" he screamed, his voice hoarse. His throat felt raw from the smoke and the coughing fits that had overtaken him as soon as he'd entered the field. Kachada had already been attempting to get the flames under control using dirt and water from the well. He'd gotten the pump going—how he'd managed it so quickly Tom had no idea—but it was of little use with such a fire as this one. The only thing they had in their favor was that the flames seemed to prefer traveling in a straight, or nearly straight, line.

The Gillersons had run to the opposite end of the field and set a counter-fire. Tom had not been sure it would work but he'd had little choice in the matter. If they did nothing, the flames would take everything. If they tried the counter-fire and it failed, he would be no worse off. If, however, the counter-fire succeeded, as it now appeared to be doing, at least part of their farm might be saved.

Tom ran to the spot where he'd seen Bia fall after pushing Henry out of the way of the falling silo. The structure had nearly collapsed on them both. Henry had lost him in the smoke, and he'd only just spotted him moments before the silo fell. He'd tried to call out to him and Bia but neither had been able to hear him. When the wood hit Bia, he had winced. He knew it had hurt her but it had not looked that bad. Until she had not risen.

"Bia!" he cried again as he reached her side. It felt as though it had taken him an eternity to get to her. Kachada had materialized from nowhere, on his heels. Tom lifted Bia off the ground, carrying her to the safety area beside their house. He laid her on the ground, kneeling on one side, Kachada kneeled on her opposite side. Henry had followed them but he seemed not to be aware of what he was doing. His eyes were blank. He was staring at Bia as though he could see right through her.

"Henry?" Tom yelled, worried he had also been hit and Tom had not realized it.

Henry blinked at him. "She saved me," he said, so quietly that Tom almost missed it.

Tom looked behind Henry at the dying flames, satisfied that he was not injured, or if he was, it was not severe. The fire still burned but it was dwindling now. The counter-fire appeared to have work. He was grateful to the Gillersons for their help. They stood nearby them, watching the new scene unfolding before their eyes.

"Ted," Tom yelled, getting the attention of the eldest Gillerson. "Bia's hurt. We need a doctor."

"I'll go," Danny said, immediately volunteering. "I'm a fast runner." His father nodded and Danny took off with lightning speed.

Tom searched Bia for any sign of injury, gently touching her head. "Oh, God!" he cried when he saw the blood.
