Chapter Twelve

Margaret heard James bellow something but couldn’t make it out through the closed door. Apparently, the servants had put out the flames almost as soon as she caught the scent of something burning. She didn’t know what had started the fire, but it had her husband upset.

Standing outside the house, she turned her back to the door and assessed the street. There were plenty of places to hide in the dark shadows.

Maybe Lily was right. Maybe someone was watching her. The sense of someone watching her caused the hairs on the back of Margaret’s neck stick up. Where was the man—or woman? Given that she was an assassin, the Shadows may have a contracted assassin who was a woman too.

She surveyed the buildings around her, every garden and marble statue in the yards, and every window. Unless the Shadow agent owned or rented one of these grand houses, there was absolutely no way that he could make it into one of the buildings—or could he?

Margaret remembered Matilda once saying that her uncle’s house, the safe house, and the duke’s residence had secret passageways throughout. Could there be underground tunnels from one house to another? She would have to ask Matilda if she had ever found one.

The door behind her snicked open, and her husband’s warm arms wrapped around her. She stiffened for a moment.

“What’s wrong?” he asked as he kissed her neck below her ear. The man knew her buttons, and that was a big one.

“We are being watched. I can’t figure out where they are hiding, but I know they are there. Lily was right—not that I didn’t believe her before.”

“Are you certain?” James asked in a whisper as he continued to kiss a path down her neck.

Margaret could barely hold back a moan of pleasure before responding, “Yes, of course I am. You know that feeling you get when you are being followed? I felt that, and my instincts are rather good.”

James lifted his head and stared into her eyes. “I believe you. I’ve felt the same way since Lily found her way to our house. I don’t know what is going on, but we need to tell Tarleton. In the meantime, I want to make love to my wife.”

Margaret wholeheartedly agreed. She needed only what he could give her.

Margaret felt her feet leave the ground as James picked her up and strode back into the house. He carried her up the stairs to their rooms and deposited her onto the bed.

“Please…” she begged before James took his time worshipping her body.

From a secret room adjoining the viscount’s chambers, a man dressed all in black waited. The last thing he’d ever wanted was to listen to Riverton make love to his wife. Damn the man he worked for—damn him to hell and back. Voyeurism wasn’t something he was into. He shook his head. No matter what, he would have to wait until both participants fell asleep before he could do what he was sent to do.

He glanced down at the missive in his hand.
