7 HOW TO MAXIMIZE PLEASURE IN A WORLD OF FLESH-CONSUMING ANGUISH

Destroying the living or undead may be said to be conformable to the principle of utility when the tendency this destruction has to augment the happiness of a survivor community is greater than any it has to diminish it.

—PRINCIPLES OF POST-APOCALYPTIC MORALS AND LEGISLATION FOR SURVIVOR COMMUNITIES

As mentioned at the end of the last chapter, the utilitarian would not be troubled by hordeology. If killing one person will save the rest of the community from the clutches of the undead, then that is what should be done. The same is true of the undead. If destroying them will augment the happiness of the community, then they should be destroyed. Things aren’t always so clear-cut though. Zombie search and destroy missions can put survivors at unnecessary risk for infection. Likewise, if your community is fending off the undead, it is not always so easy to figure out which of the various actions you could perform would actually bring the greatest happiness, or ensure the least unhappiness, for your community. This chapter will examine different utilitarian procedures for determining which act you ought to perform in order to ensure the overall happiness of your community.
