After everyone went home, Inga sat in her office and enjoyed the solitude to think clearly. It had been a few days since she last saw Osayik. She missed him more than sheâd like to admit. Maybe he was busy with Chief Mozar and had traveled to another province.
Inga reviewed her checklist before she went home for the evening. She pulled up a virtual screen from her smart bracelet and inspected what needed a second pass.
Would it surprise Osayik if she sent him a message? What could she say? Would he assume she needed more help from him? After staring at her smart bracelet a few more minutes, she decided against it. What if he was in the middle of an important negotiation? Sheâd send him a message later.
She finalized the model lineup. She had five male and five female models ready. Osayik had completed the music and graphics. Lighting was all set as well. She glanced at the layout of the backyard where the show would take place. Four large tents made a seating area for the guests. Two on each side of a long rug that served as the runway, mimicking the appearance of a stone pathway. Round tables and comfortable chairs were all arranged. In one corner, a large banquet table allowed for foods and drinks, which Laney and Melba would take care of. Raekoâs sister, Neesa, would provide the desserts because she worked at a pastry shop.
A loud crash sounded outside, and Inga jumped. She rushed out and found one tent had fallen. Crap. She rushed over, looking to see what she could do. She pushed at the frame, but she wasnât strong enough.
âWhat happened?â Osayik asked, standing next to her.
Her heart leaped at the sound of his voice. It thudded uncontrollably, not because he startled her, but because he was here. He wore a white shirt with a few undone buttons and rolled-up sleeves that showed off his powerful muscles. He paired the shirt with black leather pants, and the perfect image excited her.
âI donât know. I was working inside and heard a crash, so I came out to see.â
Lines dug into his forehead as he walked around the tent. The absence of him from the past few days allowed her to look at her situation differently. Pressure from the challenge gnawed at her. At Emmaâs house, she knew he didnât want to model, yet she dared him anyway. She had put him on the spot in front of his brothers and her sisters.
Then again, he had retaliated with his own demands. She wanted nothing more than to prove that she could achieve anything she put her mind to. Since when had she yearned to please a man like this? His subtle hints and innuendos made her read between the lines. She was probably reading into the empty spaces of nothingness.
Regardless, the right thing to do was to give him the opportunity to back out. She could work with just four male models. Sheâd be fine with that.
