Götz hurried after Ira, who had stormed out of the conference room.

‘Ira, wait!’

He could imagine what she was thinking as she rushed towards the elevators. Stuck was dead, and she knew that first hand. But she couldn’t tell anyone about the eyewitness. If it came out that Ira was concealing the existence of an eighth hostage, especially one who happened to be her daughter, Steuer might even have her arrested. The inner conflict must be tearing her apart. Should she do her job and distract Jan while the SEK storm in? Or should she prevent it from happening by laying her cards on the table? But if she did that, there would be nothing more she could do to help Kitty. Either way, she was putting her daughter’s life at risk.

‘Where are you running to?’ Götz had almost caught up with her.

‘Come with me!’ she answered, without turning around to him. He caught up with her and touched her softly on the neck. She stopped abruptly, as though he had pressed an invisible stop button. He knew this spot. He had touched her there so often back then, stroked her there, kissed her there. But never under such extreme circumstances.

‘I’m so sorry, Ira,’ he said. ‘Steuer’s making a mistake. I guess he’s under pressure from above. But I have no idea how I can change his mind now. Especially with such little time. I should have briefed my team by now.’

She turned around to him. Beneath her dark eyes lay even darker rings, which in a bizarre way harmonised with her flushed cheeks.

‘Then go. But leave the walkie-talkie with me.’ She pointed at the bulging side pocket in his camouflage trousers, containing the UPS walkie-talkie.

‘What are you going to do?’

Ira pulled her T-shirt from her cargo pants and used it to wipe the sweat from her forehead. Even though it was a completely inappropriate thought given the situation, Götz found himself wishing he could touch her belly button.

‘I have to speak to her,’ she said eventually. ‘With Kitty.’

‘What is that supposed to achieve?’

‘She’s the only one who can help us make the right decision now.’
