Late afternoon, Beth’s father drove them home. Once the buggy stopped in front of their white farmhouse, he pulled her to him. She buried her head in his chest. Feeling his beating heart gave her the comfort and security she required. His father’s love eased her pain for a moment. What was it about your parents that when you were at rock bottom, they somehow managed to give you the strength to face tragedy? Beth wondered. Their never-ending love was always there for you to tap into, so you could survive a terrible loss.

But could her heart survive losing her baby?

“I love you, Daddy,” Beth murmured, as she remained in the circle of his comforting arms.

“I love you too.” He loosened his hold of her and stared into her eyes. “Call anytime you want. We’ll be here for you whenever you need anything.”

“Danki,” she said, noticing Henry was already on the ground, waiting to help her down.

After Henry assisted her out of the buggy, she said, “I’m going to gather the eggs. I never did it today.”

“I can get the eggs. Why don’t you go in the house and rest?”

“I want to do something that I usually do. I need a bit of a routine.” Beth walked to the porch and picked up the egg basket. She had to hurry and get into the chicken coop before she broke down and cried again. Wanting to be alone for a bit was another reason she needed to escape.

Henry removed his straw hat and tossed it on a metal chair. “Okay, I’ll go to the barn and take care of the livestock.”

Entering the chicken coop, she took a deep breath. Going to each nest to get the eggs suddenly was overwhelming and too difficult. A rush of anger went through her body at the unfairness of losing her daughter. She wanted to scream in pain and yell at God for allowing this tragedy in her life and Henry’s. I can’t scream. It’ll frighten Henry and he’ll come running to see if I’m hurt.

A strong sense of bitterness rose inside her. She held an egg in her hand for a second, and then aimed it at the wall. She let the egg fly and it spattered against the wood. Because of the intensity of her many emotions, Beth had a deep feeling of loneliness, and she knew why. Without the active and strong kicking of her child, she felt deprived.

The only way she could cope was to have her baby today. Waiting for several days would not be the best for anyone. Having labor induced frightened her, but hoping for contractions to start soon was not an option for her. Yearning to hold their baby in her arms was what she needed to do instead of continuing to carry her dead child inside her womb.

In a rush, she gathered the remaining eggs and left the chicken coop to go to the barn to tell Henry what she wanted to do.
