I had just picked Zayd up from school and made a pit stop at the grocery store because keeping food in the house with a growing boy was impossible. Zayd pushed the cart while we maneuvered through the aisles picking up what he considered the essentials, but it was nothing but junk.

We checked out, and I made him load the bags in the car to earn his keep. Had I known his mind was busy at work, I would’ve helped him because I wasn’t prepared for what came next.

“I heard you and my mom arguing the other day,” Zayd’s words stopped my heart. “Are you mad at her?”

Tequila and I had been arguing nonstop since I refused to let her take Zayd to Atlanta. It was to the point now that I didn’t even answer her calls. If it were something important, she would call Zayd or text me. Majority of the time, it wasn’t, which resulted in long ass paragraphs I wasn’t reading.

Of course, I’m mad. You deserve better than the bullshit she gives you.

Zayd couldn’t understand that. Whenever I called to complain about Tequila, my mom would remind me I was doing a good job. Inconsistent parents did a great job ruining their image, just like my biological father did. He knew how to make promises but didn’t know how to keep them. When I was young, I accepted his excuses, but the older I became, I realized that if he wanted to be in my life, he would. A painful lesson Zayd would have to learn too.

“No, I’m not mad at her. We don’t always agree, so sometimes we fuss. It’s nothing to worry about.”

Zayd nodded, accepting my answer.

“Have you met Blake?” I asked out of curiosity.

“Yeah.”

“What do you think about him?” I asked because his feelings mattered.

“He’s cool. We played 2K together,” Zayd responded in a way that didn’t give much away.

“That’s good. How would you feel if I got a boyfriend?” I asked, testing his response.

His face contorted in a way that almost made me chuckle. Zayd seemed more bothered about me dating than his mother, but he would have to get over it. Things flowed so easily and naturally with Cree that now seemed like a good time to gauge his opinion.

“Do you have a boyfriend?” Zayd asked.

Cree and I still hadn’t labeled anything, but we had been spending a lot of time together. He even came to Zayd’s game which had Demir looking a lot like Zayd was right now. Van and Yarah made inappropriate jokes the whole time.

He deserved a positive man in his life, and I deserved that too. Watching them together after the game made me feel like my dream wasn’t as far-fetched as it seemed.

The three of us even went out for pizza afterward. I was nervous about accepting his invitation, but Zayd didn’t leave much choice. Whenever food was involved, he was down. I was scared, but the evening flowed so organically that I wanted more.

“I’ve been seeing somebody,” I admitted.
