Chapter 11

“Hey, how was your week?”

“Good,” Alex lied as she cradled her phone on her shoulder and fastened her jeans. “How was yours?”

“Can I just tell you that Lisa Beaudreaux has one big fat snooker for you?”

Alex groaned and laughed. “She’s made that quite clear. Everyone at work knows that I refuse to be in an exam room alone with her.”

“What’re you doing? I hear you shuffling around.”

Alex tried to sound upbeat as she said, “I’m getting dressed to go to dinner with a woman I know.”

Dana was silent for a second or two. “I thought you said you weren’t ready to date.”

“This is…kind of a friendly date, not really a date kind of thing.”

“Oh, so it’s a platonic thing.”

“Sometimes.”

Dana was quiet again, then inhaled sharply. “You have a fuck buddy!”

“She’s a friend with benefits.”

“Who is she?”

“A pharmaceutical rep that travels a lot. I don’t see her very often,” Alex said as she walked into her bedroom and opened her closet. “Red or blue shirt?”

“Red, it goes well with your coloring. Why are you even bothering to get dressed?”

Alex chose the red one and slipped it on while juggling the phone. “It’s not all sex. Sometimes, we just go have dinner and talk.”

“I’m so jealous,” Dana admitted with a laugh that didn’t sound genuine to either of them.

“What’re you doing tonight?”

“I was going to see if you wanted to have a drink.”

“How about tomorrow night?” Alex ran her hands through her hair and just gave up on doing anything with it.

“That sounds great. Call me.”

“I will. Thanks for the clothing advice.”

“Go have fun.”

When the call ended, Dana looked at her watch. If she hurried, she could get to the nursery before it closed and pick up the clematis and a few vegetable plants. She grabbed her keys and jogged downstairs.

“Clara, I’m gonna run to the store, do you need anything?”

“No, dear, but thank you. Where’s Sydney?”

“She took an extra shift when someone called in sick. She’ll be home by nine.”

Clara looked up from the crossword puzzle she was working at the kitchen table. “I’ll keep dinner warm for her in case she wants to eat.”

“Thank you.”

Dana jogged out to her car and climbed in. As she drove out of the driveway, she wondered what it would be like to go on a date with a woman. Men naturally took the lead, but she was curious as to whom assumed that role between women. She figured in Alex’s case, it was her. Dana smiled as she imagined Alex and her chivalrous nature. She’d be the type to open doors and initiate the good night kiss, maybe more if the evening went well. Her smile faded as an image of Alex being intimate with a woman flashed through her mind. A feeling of disquiet settled in the pit of her stomach.

We went for hours. Sex with a woman is work! But, oh, the orgasms. She played my body like a fiddle. I kept hitting those high notes if you know what I mean.
